Magitek is the generic term for technology so advanced as to be indistinguishable from magic. Magitek drives everything from the radiation box used to heat your rations to the most complex systems aboard the Fenris.
Thousands of years ago, a scientist whose name has been lost to time made a technological breakthrough: they created microscopic, hyper-efficient, intelligent, self-replicating machines. For better or worse, those original nanites escaped the lab and have managed to permeate all of civilized space. Supercorporations seized upon this new normal and use this “invisible sea” of nanites to power magitek of all sorts. Perhaps the most successful and ubiquitous application of nanite-based magitek is Universal Speech.
Due to the magitek of nanites, all civilized species are able to communicate and understand one another verbally.
Most denizens of civilized space own a data tablet, or just a “tablet”. (OOG: a smartphone). They come in as many shapes and sizes as there are individuals. Elves however, always refer to them as “datapads” instead.
These symbols can be found all over civilized space. They contain incredibly dense blocks of information accessible by even the most ancient model of data tablet.

High Efficiency Miniaturized Energy Sources, or HEMES, power many of the wonders of magitek. The smallest of these are referred to as Silver, and function as a universal currency. See: Trade & Negotiation
Interstellar gates, or just “gates” are the primary means of travel between solar systems. The installation of Gates in solar systems with habitable worlds started as a project of the yetton people, but was quickly adopted by elves, the avarix, and others.
Three intergalactic gates were also built, the crowning achievement of Civilized Space. One of these gates, the Ea-Eos Gate, was an early casualty of the Maelstrom.
It is generally understood that they work by folding space-time. Exactly how is a mystery to all but the wisest of elf and yetton arcanists.
